Boyband warning! Arashi (Storm) is a five-member Japanese boy band under Johnny & Associates. They made their debut in September 15, 1999. Arashi covers a wide range of music, including R&B, hip hop and various forms of pop music. Aside from being a popular idol group in Japan, the group is widely known across Asia and to J-pop fans all over the world. Their debut single, "A・RA・SHI", became the theme song for the 8th World Cup of Volleyball hosted by Japan in 1999. They gained widespread exposure when they sang their debut single at the cup's opening on November 2, 1999. Aya Ueto

Aya Ueto, I consider her a Japanese Idol, but she made some songs so here she is. I suggest you skip the music, watch her videoclips and the movie Azumi. In 1997, Aya Ueto participated in the 7th All-Japan National Young Beauty contest, where she received a special award from the judges. Her discovery led to many TV commercial deals, which eventually started her acting career. In 1999, she formed the J-pop band Z-1 with Mami Nejiki, Mai Fujiya, and Manami Nishiwaki. They released five singles before breaking up, but Aya went on to start a solo career when she signed with Pony Canyon two years later. She released her first single, "Pureness," in 2002. It peaked at #4 on the Oricon charts and became the first female artist debut single in 3 years and 3 months to enter the Top 5 since Kyoko Fukada. Since then, she has released thirteen singles and six albums.

A good first impression : Aya ueto - Kizuna

Ayumi Hamasaki

Ayumi Hamasaki is an award-winning J-pop singer-songwriter. Also known as Ayu, Hamasaki is one of Japan's most popular and influential pop singers and has been dubbed "The Empress of J-Pop". I don't like this style of music, but I must agree she's got quite a reputation. Since her 1998 debut with the single "Poker Face," she has sold around 50 million records, making her the highest selling female and solo artist in Japanese history, with the releases of her nine full-length studio albums, one mini-album, four compilation albums, forty-four singles, and numerous non-studio albums. Hamasaki won the Artist Of The Year Award, the Japanese equivalent of the American Grammy, a total of three times, in 2001, 2002, and 2004 Ayumi Hamamasaki is so incredibly famous, I wonder why you are reading this, you probably know all about her, right? No? Well there is a very very short summary of her story on wikipedia: Right here

A good first impression : Ayumi Hamasaki - ...
Youtube deleted all her songs >.< (I will search again later today, or send me a link)

DJ Ozma

DJ OZMA (Diijei Ozuma) is a Japanese pop singer, widely rumored to be the alter ego of Kishidan singer Shou Ayanokoji. He first came to prominence in early 2006 and is notorious for his performance at the 57th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen. DJ OZMA's songs are generally cover versions by other groups including many Korean artists, such as Koyote and DJ Doc, though the original versions also include Kishidan work. I find his songs quite funny, but not that funny. His music style is a bit weird and I think the chance you will like it is kinda... 0,01%

A good first impression : DJ Ozma - Bounce with me

Dragon Ash

Although the internet says it is a rock band, you got to believe me it is a pop band. Dragon Ash is a Japanese hip hop group led by Kenji Furuya. They are an icon in Japan and were one of the first groups to popularize hip hop in Japan. They brought an American flavor to Japanese music and helped to turn rap music mainstream, with a mixture of reggae, rap, rap-rock, punk, Spanish, and R&B influences. The group uses various samples, most notably from the famous American alternative rock group, The Smashing Pumpkins. These songs include Cherub Rock, in which they sample the bass line from The Smashing Pumpkins song by the same name, and Grateful Days in which they sample the opening of Today; they also named the song Siva, after the Pumpkins song.
Members: Kenji Furuya, Ikuzo Baba, Makoto Sakurai, Bots, Hiroki, Atsushi, Dri-V

A good first impression : Dragon Ash - Grateful Days
I don't like it, but heck, just me.

Gackt

What shall I say about Gackt, I prefer his Visual K style, but his solo career is doing pretty good too. (Kamui Gakuto) Gackt is a Japanese musician, songwriter and actor. Usually referred to by his stage name only, he is best known for his work with Malice Mizer and his subsequent career as a successful solo artist. In 1995, after quitting his job at a casino to go to Tokyo, Gackt joined Malice Mizer as the group's vocalist, lyricist and pianist. Gackt launched his solo career on May 12, 1999 with the release of the EP Mizerable. Several albums, singles and videos (on VHS and DVD) have since followed. Gackt is very popular among the girls in Japan and outside

A good first impression of his Visual K style: Gackt - Redemption

A good first impression of his smexy solo side: Gackt- Discography compilation

Glay

Glay, Jpop or Jrock? I've chosen for Jpop, which is probably the best choise. Glay is a rock/pop band from Hakodate, Hokkaidō, Japan formed by guitarist Takuro and vocalist Teru during high school in 1988. Glay primarily composes songs in the rock and pop genres, but they have also composed songs using elements of different styles such as reggae and gospel. They have sold over 36 million records as of 2007.

Members: Teru, Takuro, Hisashi, Jiro

A good first impression : Glay - Mermaid
This may sound as Jrock, but it's a good song to get a first impression.

V6

Boyband warning: V6 is a very popular Japanese idol group, formed by Johnny & Associates. They debuted on 1 November 1995 with CD-Single "MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE". Due to the age difference between the 6 members (the difference between oldest member, Sakamoto and youngest member, Okada, is 9 years), the band was separated into "20th Century" and "Coming Century". As they are 'idols', each member takes part in a variety of activities - as well as singing, they appear in TV dramas, variety shows, host radio programmes etc. 20th Century are usually associated with being on stage in plays and musicals, whereas Coming Century are more often in TV dramas (although every member has done both). V6 hosts two weekly TV shows as a group, "Gakkou e ikou" and "Viva Viva V6". Along with their group shows, they also have individual TV shows, dramas or radio programs. Miyake is a regular in the TV show "Itou-ke no Shokutaku (The Itou Family Dinner)". V6 celebrated their 10th year anniversary in 2005. They commemorated the event by holding about 30 concerts in sold-out arenas all over Japan, holding 3 major "Thank You Events", releasing a hit movie "Hold Up Down" and releasing a new album "Musicmind". They also had a rare "Handshake Session" with hundreds of thousands of fans in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.
Members: Sakamoto Masayuki, Nagano Hiroshi, Inohara Yoshihiko, Morita Go, Miyake Ken, Okada Junichi

A good first impression : V6 - empty

YUI

Yui (born March 26, 1987 in Fukuoka, Japan) is a Japanese singer-songwriter and actress. She is currently signed to Sony Music Records Japan. Yui began writing songs in ninth grade. At the age of sixteen on the recommendation of a friend she began studying songwriting and guitar at a private music school in her hometown of Fukuoka. Aspiring to become a professional, she carried her guitar around and sang at local places such as the seashore of Shingu and in the middle of rice fields at Kaminofu. Even though she was shy she still enjoyed doing street performances in the Tenjin district of Fukuoka. Her professional career began in March 2004 when she sang three songs at an audition hosted by Sony Music Japan. Many months later, Yui starred in a movie released on June 17, 2006, titled Taiyou No Uta-Midnight Sun, which was screened at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Yui's 5th single, "Good-bye Days", was written for this film and is by far her highest selling single at 200,000 copies sold.

A good first impression: YUI - Goodbye Days
Very touching song, her best single ever. Check out Rolling Star too, which contains more rock
